This is Part III of a three-part series highlighting the top-3 things you should be doing with a respective social media account (facebook, twitter and pinterest).
As the manager of our social media
sites here at the AVCA, I have seen first-hand what kind of impact social media
has had on the world, but more specifically on the volleyball community.
It is no longer a wave of the future, IT IS HERE RIGHT NOW. If you’re a
volleyball coach, player or SID and your team does not have a social media
presence, then now is the time my friend and I am here to help!
I know many of you are already hitting that world hard, but there are a few
suggestions that can get your accounts to keep growing!
Today's topic: Pinterest
OK...I'm sure by now you've at least heard of Pinterest, but this social media site is still relatively new. So new in fact you have to send in a request to create an account, and they'll shoot you an email when it's approved (about 1-3 days).
To be honest, we here at the AVCA have only had a Pinterest account for about two months, so I would say it's still in the infancy stage. We're still trying to find our "identity" on it so to speak, but that's something that comes with time. If you are unfamiliar with Pinterest there's just one thing to know: PICTURES!!!!!
Literally, that's all it is except maybe a few videos here and there. You can create boards (see the snapshot of our account...oh and follow us so we can follow you back!) with categories then dump photos into the appropriate boards. You can also "pin" a photo right off a web page into one of your boards, so others can click on the photo and be taken directly to that web page you pulled it from. I think it's pretty cool and it's blowing up the social media stratosphere.
Here are the top-3 points to know for your program's Pinterest account:
Post interesting pictures
Once again, it's one of those "duh" statements, but the whole point of this social media phenomenon is to share photos and pictures people care about...or at the very least get a laugh out of them. Many times they'll just be interesting photos on websites you stumble across while doing your everyday web browsing. But for your team, I think grabbing photos taken by a photographer or someone at a match and uploading them to Pinterest would be a big hit. It keeps everyone visually connected, and makes it easy for others to share or "re-pin" to the masses!
Follow other accounts
Much like Facebook and Twitter, it wouldn't be much fun to only share what you're doing but not receive anything in return. Remember, it's SOCIAL media...not isolated media. A large amount of the pins on the AVCA account come from other accounts that we re-pinned. You can use a search box to search key words for accounts that are relevant to you.
Kick back and enjoy at your ease
While Twitter is a lifestyle and Facebook requires regular attention, Pinterest can be accessed at your own ease. There's no need to constantly check it because it's not information based, but pictorially based. No one will reach out to you with anything urgent on Pinterest, which makes this a lot more of a relaxed media venue. Plus before you know it, you'll be cruisin' Pinterest on a regular basis simply because you love it! After all, who doesn't love scrolling through awesome photos!?
I always love hearing some feedback, so feel free to comment below or shoot me an email at david.portney@avca.org. I enjoy talking about this kind of stuff, and I'm here to help with any questions, comments or concerns you might have about creating or expanding your social media network!
